New Childhood Asthma and Bedwetting Research: A Chiropractic Solution

Changes in Asthma Symptoms and Bedwetting in a Four Year Old Child Receiving Chiropractic Care

Most people do not equate Chiropractic care to the alleviation of asthma and/or bedwetting.  It’s funny because Dr. Karla Miller, the chiropractor I practice with, had childhood asthma, went to a chiropractor and her asthma vanished. This is the reason Dr. Karla became a doctor of chiropractic.  Recently, new research has just been published that describes and discusses changes in asthma, bedwetting and allergy symptoms in a four-year-old child receiving chiropractic care.

In this article, a four-year-old child diagnosed with asthma and a history of allergies, bedwetting and disrupted sleep presented for chiropractic care.

The child received spinal and cranial adjustments specific for a pediatric patient.  After 32 weeks of chiropractic care the child no longer had asthma symptoms, bedwetting had ceased and a positive change in other presenting symptoms was noted.

The conclusion of this article is encouraging.   There are a growing number of case reports that describe improvements in childhood problems such as asthma and nocturnal enuresis in children receiving chiropractic care. There is a hope of further study to investigate the role chiropractors may play in caring for children with these disorders.

The need for these types of NON-INVASIVE interventions are massive. Let’s review the medical treatment for both asthma and bedwetting (according to the Mayo Clinic).

Asthma

In most cases, these medications need to be taken every day. Types of long-term control medications include:

Inhaled corticosteroids. Long-term use of these medications has been associated with slightly slowed growth in children.

Leukotriene modifiers. These oral medications include montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate) and zileuton (Zyflo, Zyflo CR). these medications have been linked to psychological reactions, such as agitation, aggression, hallucinations, depression and suicidal thinking.

Combination inhalers. They include fluticasone and salmeterol (Advair Diskus,Advair HFA), budesonide and formoterol (Symbicort), and mometasone and formoterol (Dulera). In some situations, long-acting beta agonists have been linked to severe asthma attacks.

Bedwetting

Your child’s doctor may prescribe medication to stop bed-wetting. Various types of medication can:

Desmopressin acetate (DDAVP): Slow nighttime urine production. Although DDAVP has few side effects, the most serious is a seizure. This can happen if the medication is accompanied by too many fluids. For this reason, don’t use this medication on nights when your child has had a lot of fluids. Additionally, don’t give your child this medication if he or she has a headache, has vomited or feels nauseous.

Anticholinergic drug such as oxybutynin (Ditropan) or hyoscyamine (Levsin):  Calm the bladder. Side effects may include dry mouth and facial flushing.

Antidepressant imipramine (Tofranil): Change a child’s sleeping and waking pattern. Caution is essential when using this medication, because an overdose could be fatal.

Considering the side effects of the above mentioned drugs, consider Chiropractic First!!
