Dr. Maj shares her personal struggles with flexibility! No matter how old you feel or the calendar says you are, flexibility can be recovered by stretching regularly and improvement can be seen within a few short weeks.
By age 30, our body’s connective tissues start to lose elasticity. Our muscles, tendons, and ligaments start to shorten and tighten. Poor posture like slumping while you sit, stand, or walk causes tightening and reduces blood flow to connective tissues. Over time, this can create a buildup of calcifications, which are those hard knots most of us have in our upper back, not to mention a hunched, aged look and limited range of movement.
Flexibility Helps To:
- Prevent everyday injury including: muscle and disc strains that occur when turning over in bed or getting out of bed; shoulder tweaks that result from doing tasks on the job that involve lifting or reaching; back aches due to transitioning to standing from sitting, bending down to pick something up, or even walking up and down the stairs
- Improve your posture
- Lengthen your muscles for a longer leaner look
- Make playing with your kids and grandbabies easier and less injurious
- Allow you to feel more free, open, calm, content, and confident from the inside out
- Spread “innate” (life force) into your cells, which invigorates your body, mind and spirit
- Make cardio activity a lot lighter and easier
- Enhance sports performance (i.e. better arm and shoulder extension and rotation, longer strides, deeper knee bends and hip flexion) , especially golf and tennis.
- Travel more comfortably because of the ability to sit in many different positions and do things with your body in confined spaces you otherwise could not do.
