060 Lose 10% & Gain a Ton!

July 11, 2016 by drmaj

http://traffic.libsyn.com/womenseekingwellness/Ep60_WomenSeekingWellness.mp3

It could be called the 10 percent solution: in recent years a steady stream of research has found that losing as little as 10 percent of body weight, or sometimes even less, has a disproportionately positive effect in improving health. Small weight losses significantly reduce the risk of a wide range of illnesses that have been linked to obesity, from heart disease and diabetes to some kinds of cancer.

MORE than half of American women are overweight or obese, and as they age they are likely to get fatter and unhealthier. Chunking this goal down is the key to success!

BENEFITS OF JUST 10%

A Healthier Heart
By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you can lower your cholesterol and reduce your blood pressure. High cholesterol and elevated blood pressure are two major risk factors for heart disease.

Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
If you’re overweight, you’re at increased risk for type 2 diabetes, which means your body can’t make enough, or properly use, insulin, a hormone that helps convert food to usable energy. By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you’ll improve your body’s ability to use the insulin it makes, possibly preventing the onset of the disease. If you already have type 2 diabetes, shedding that 10 percent may improve your symptoms and possibly prevent complications.

More Pep
Just a 10 percent weight loss increases feelings of vigor and vitality. You’ll feel better and have more energy.

A Mental Edge
Losing 10 percent can give you the self-confidence and motivation you need to keep going. “Success builds on success!” But be sure you recognize it.

Losing 10 percent is a milestone in the journey. Once you get there, take the time to congratulate yourself on your efforts.

Reality Check
After losing 10 percent, you gain a sense of what it will take to lose the rest and reach your final goal weight. It gives you a context in terms of saying, “Am I willing to put in that much more effort to lose even more weight?” If the answer is no, that’s okay. Some people only lose 10 percent and that’s it. If that’s you, pat yourself on the back. Health-wise, a 10-percent weight loss is a great achievement.

059 Alyssa Weishaar | One Chin-up at a Time…the POWER of the Pull-up!

July 5, 2016 by drmaj

http://traffic.libsyn.com/womenseekingwellness/Ep59_WomenSeekingWellness.mp3

Alyssa_Weishaar

Teach women to overcome the LIE that they cannot do a chin-up. It is a slow process yet women can be strong without being big and bulky! Meeting women where they are at and where to start to get them to the ultimate goal. #JustONE

Quote of the show: Being strong comes in many different forms!

BIO:

My name is Alyssa Weishaar and I am a fitness and lifestyle coach with over ten years of experience. My background is in gymnastics, which I still practice to this day. I fell in love with Kettlebells when I started at Rebell in 2012, and was inspired to get serious and train for the level 1 certification, which I earned earlier this year. As I became consistent with my kettlebell training, I saw a significant increase in my strength, and major changes in my body. I use kettlebell training, strength training, nutrition, and bodywork to help my clients transform into the best versions of themselves.

I believe strength training develops power that stays with clients for the rest of their lives. With that power comes the responsibility to take care of oneself, and to that I am also a Precision Nutrition certified coach and educate my clients on the fundamentals of healthy eating.

058 Alyssa Weishaar | Evolve & Elevate with Functional Movement

Alyssa_Weishaar

Dr. Maj & Alyssa discuss how does the body move, functionally that can cause us to be healthy and cause us to injure ourselves? Does weight training bulk me up?

Chiropractic is the structural glue and the weight training worked on strength that helps hold alignment. Muscles support our skeletal system so you can run after that baby and stay active throughout your life!

Quote of the episode: When I exercise…It gives my mind to REST!

043 Text Neck – The plight of 21st Century Humans

May 9, 2016 by drmaj

http://traffic.libsyn.com/womenseekingwellness/043_Text_neck.mp3

Text Neck

The human head weighs about a dozen pounds. But as the neck bends forward and down, the weight on the cervical spine begins to increase. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it’s 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it’s 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds. Can’t grasp the significance of 60 pounds? Imagine carrying an 8-year-old around your neck several hours per day.

That’s the burden that comes with staring at a smartphone — the way millions do for hours every day, according to research published by Kenneth Hansraj in the National Library of Medicine. https://cbsminnesota.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/spine-study.pdf

7 fast facts in regards to negative consequences Forward Head Posture

(1) Long-term forward neck posture leads to “long-term muscle strain, disc herniations and pinched nerves.” (Mayo Clinic Health Letter, March 2000).

(2) In regard to respiratory dysfunction in chronic neck pain patients, a recent study “demonstrated a strong association between an increased forward head posture and decreased respiratory muscle strength in neck patients.” (Cephalgia, February 2009).

(3) “For every inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” (Kapandji, Physiology of the Joints, Volume 3).

(4) “Loss of the cervical curve stretches the spinal cord 5-7 cm and causes disease.” (Dr. Alf Breig, neurosurgeon and Nobel Prize recipient).

(5) “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine,” says Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize recipient for brain research. Dr. Sperry demonstrated that 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body to gravity. Only 10% has to do with thinking, metabolism, and healing, so when you have forward head posture, your brain will rob energy from your thinking, metabolism, and immune function to deal with abnormal gravity/posture relationships and processing.

(6) According to Rene Cailliet, MD, director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California, forward head posture (FHP) can add up to 30 pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. FHP results in loss of vital capacity of the lungs by as much as 30%. This shortness of breath can lead to heart and blood vascular disease. The entire gastrointestinal system is affected; particularly the large intestine. Loss of good bowel peristaltic function and evacuation is a common effect of FHP. It causes an increase in discomfort and pain because proprioceptive signals from the first four cervical vertebrae are a major source of the stimuli which create the body’s pain controlling chemicals (endorphins). With inadequate endorphin production, many otherwise non-painful sensations are experienced as pain. FHP dramatically reduces endorphin production.

(7) FHP has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in disc compression, damage and early arthritis. (Spine, 1986).

This summary presents some good information to consider in our journey of improving our posture. You will not restore, regain, or normalize your posture over night and it will take daily work that is committed to improving and maintaining your posture. For our body to function properly we must remove the areas of dys-function and posture proves to be an important starting point.
